Heartunions week is a week of activity throughout England and Wales promoting the benefits of trades unionism, raising the profile of unions in their communities and online.

In line with previous years this week is all about building a stronger movement after the trade union act. Its key focus is on building on membership numbers and strength, showing that even as the government continues to attack unions, we will respond by growing stronger and focusing relentlessly on serving our members.

It also provides an opportunity for unions to show local communities that they are active in the local area, which is particularly important following the Brexit referendum.

This year we are focusing on the following areas;

Fair funding for public services

Regional actions: On Wednesday 14 February (Valentines’ Day), we would like to get key figures such as MP’s, TUs regional secretaries and public service members to sign a large valentine’s day card around loving their public services but demanding fair funding. Ideally these will be at key public service sites. We would ask each PSA lead to organise a site at which the action can happen. (please complete this form here with details of action (Time, place etc.)

The message is to focus on more funding for public services and also saying how much unions are key to this/ as well as why we heart unions.

Resources: Valentine Day Cards are available to order for free to be used at the signings and photo opportunities in work places.

Focussing on the TUC’s Great Jobs Campaign (https://www.tuc.org.uk/campaigns/great-jobs-agenda) and in particular the case for workers having an independent voice at work, achieved through recognising trade unions ( with the McStrike and Picturehouse action to be especially promoted).

Regional actions: We will target two or three major private sector employers and run actions / street stalls outside their operating sites in major locations. This will be most likely be a Fastfood store, a hotel and a cinema (sites and company still tbc.) We would ask TU’s operating in these sectors and our Trades councils and union community branches to lead on these actions. They can happen across the week (apart from the 14th)

Sixth Form College Pay negotiations update

As some of you have requested an update on Sixth Form College pay negotiations.

Please find attached the Sixth Form College bulletin that is being circulated to members today. It has a link to a survey on what action members may wish to take if the SFCA is not prepared to come back with an improved pay offer. The survey simply comprises of six questions and will take less than five minutes to complete.

It would be helpful if you are either contacted by sixth form college members, visiting sixth form colleges or attending Local Association meetings if you could push the completion of this pay survey.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards
